FoE: War Machine by Kalemon FoE: War Machine by Kalemon
I usually turn down requests, but :iconequilibrik: got somewhat lucky since his request was close to what I wanted to try and draw myself. And what I wanted to draw was metals. This was supposed to be a quick project but it got a bit out of hands and I spent way too much time fiddling with this.

War machine is a character from Fallout Equestria: Outlaw by Tofu. Haven't read the fic myself, I just drew this from given description. Heh... And I was worried I was going overboard with weaponry with that raider drawing of mine. This chap is equipped with autocannon, minigun, rocket launcher and ballistic hooves.

I also put up an imgur album with wips if you happen to be interested how I do the things I do [link].

That's about it I guess... Feedback is welcome etc.

Really cool, crisp lighting and everything! Interesting to look at even without color- I love it!

Thanks. Still struggling with colours, but I'm glad I've managed to translate some of my traditional pencil experience into digital works. :)

I like this picture so much, you don't even know. I really do enjoy your art style.
The design of the suit itself looks good. It has that tough, bulky quality that makes the Rangers so intimidating. (their guns help with that too, of course) Having the little dings and imperfections, like the crack in the eye and various chips in the armor, are a very nice touch that lend to a more authentic feel. You can definitely see this guy trudging around the Wastes, taking shots and returning them.
The perspective works effectively here. His pose and the angle we see his head make him look that much more stoic and indomitable. and, as many have pointed out already, the perspective on the autocannon is just superb and inspires me to try to work on more perspective-y things myself.
Finally, the values at work herre. I honestly can't help myself looking at all the little edges and planes. The rendering plays up the metallic quality well and has a smoothness to it that is pleasing to my eye. No detail seems to be lost. The position of the guns, as well as the background graphics create a nice dynamic feel that draw all attention to the Ranger. Hell of a dramatic presence.

I apologize for not having more in the way of improvement tips and whatnot, but really this is one of my favorite FOE pieces I've seen in a while.

I'm glad that I managed to get the feel of the character as I intended (bulky, indomitable). I was a bit worried that the pose might be too stiff or boring... I've been doing too many single character pose pictures up until now... Maybe I should try some character interaction next or something. And no problem... All feedback is appreciated very much. Though people pointing out my failures lets me learn a bit faster ;).

Oh my goodness gracious. You've taken my silly little reference and turned it into a force to be reckoned with.

This turned out incredible, I have to say. I'd say you definitely accomplished what you set out to do with metals, the lightning and reflections on this piece are fantastic. I really like your take on power armor, heavy and really thickly plated, and the additional plating by the shoulders is tastefully unique. The minigun and the missile launcher came out great, but what really takes the cake in my opinion, is that autocannon. You really nailed that thing.

After taking a peek at your imgur album, I will concede that ballistic hooves would probably function improperly on a pony, but taking into account the crossover universe this belongs in, I think a little suspension of disbelief is in order. :3

Thanks. Looking back now, the shoulder plates actually seem a tad bit off when compared to the general style of the armour... but ehh... close enough. And you are very right about the suspension of disbelief bit. I just wanted to have some kind of trigger mechanism for the ballistic hooves... eventually I went with very minimalistic approach. The original design was a bit different as you can see from the imgur album.

Looks Amazing Kalemon, you exceed all expectations and blow them out of the water.

I've had the great privilege to see this piece come into being in various phases and had the opportunity to offer my own opinion and suggestions as you worked. So first off, I want to say that I absolutely love the design of the Steel Ranger Helmet. The helmet looks thick and protective, an excellent look that suits War Machine. I especially love all the helmet's little details, such as the detail of the ears, the rivets in the middle of his face, the small cracks on his visor and light + the detail of the oxygen tubes and rebreather.

Next I wanna talk about the minigun, that minigun looks absolutely fantastic. I love the design you used on the barrel and position. Now I want to mention how I like the final design of the missile launcher, it looks heavy duty and powerful, whilst also part of his battle saddle with that bit extending off of the end of the top of the barrel. Finally the Autocannon, the glorious, glorious autocannon. You did an exceptional job on the autocannon, the amount of detail is incredible. The tall ammo clip on the end looks brilliant and fits in well with the weapon.

The Ballistic hooves look great, like someone glued two awn-off shotguns to his armoured hooves. The attention to detail with the armour is fabulous, all the interconnecting portions of the leg and the thick armoured shoulders, knees and legs +the tail and spinal armour detail, adds an amazing amount of awe to the image. You did an exceptional job Kalemon and I look forward to seeing what you do next.

I'm glad you like it. It was fun to fiddle around with this amount of weaponry and place them on a pony in a way that seems at least somewhat believable.... guns and ponies.... believable.... right. Also sorry this took such a long time... I spent way more time on this than I was originally going to and lots of time was pent on designing and redesigning weaponry and other parts of this drawing.

No need to apologize about the amount of time. It was a request, not a commission after all ;). I'm also glad you took the time to experiment with the weapons. I feel they come off so much better because of that.

Really great perspective on this one, you really did nail the metals with the lighting more than anything, It's a challenge to go grayscale and still get that proper metallic feel. Good job.

I especially like the perspective on the autocannon.

Thanks. Though I think metals might be even harder in colour with all of the reflections and stuff... The autocannon came out a bit better than I expected in the end. I had some trouble with how the bullets were fed into the thing.
